We are already elected...
There is an election coming up, perhaps you are unaware. Both here in Scotland and in the U.S. citizens are preparing to elect their new political leaders. Yes, there are hundreds of posts and articles discussing elections or the election. Many of us like to discuss which party or person we would like to vote for, we like to discuss the ups and downs of who can do what for us and who we should for vote for. The amount of adverts, leaflets, debates, TV spots and campaigning in general is all geared towards one person asking us to choose them, to elect them, to make them something in our country and society.
Christians are often called ‘the elect’ and one may think that we had been through the same process in order for God to choose us. In 1 Peter 1:2 Christians are described as the ‘…elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…’. So Christians have been elected, chosen by God. That’s amazing enough itself. Just like we look at all of the candidates available and decide which one is best for us God looked at humanity and wanted to be with us. He looked at us and said ‘yes, you are the people I choose,’ and He gave us a way to be with Him. Have you ever campaigned for God to choose you? Have you ever put out adverts, leaflets, held debates to try and convince Him? Have you ever knocked on His door to canvas for Him to choose you?
No? Me neither. Yet, God did not need any of that to choose us. All He needed was His love. Like me, you have probably done just the opposite of campaigning. You have, I am assuming, probably done more things that should convince God not to choose you than the other way around. If you are anything like me at all you have probably done a lot more that should put God off rather than convince Him, you are worth it. And yet, He chooses us still.
God has chosen us, but our responsibility is not completely removed here. We need to be willing to accept God’s choice, in God’s way. But, how do we do this? Well, the rest of 1 Peter 1:2 helps us with that. You see Christians are elect, chosen by God, but there is a parameter to this election. The entire verse reads,
‘…elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace be multiplied.’
Did you catch that? We are the elect of God in sanctification, when we obey God and are covered by the blood of Jesus. This is how we accept our election; this is how we accept God’s choice. If we do not accept His choice then God will not force us to be with Him, but when you look at how God has campaigned you begin to see that He has done a lot to convince you to accept His choice. God has given life, He has given love and He has given His Son for generations all just to convince you to come to Him; just read Matthew 11:28
‘Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,’
This election is beautiful and amazing when you think of God’s love for us. The Almighty God chose you, all you have to do is accept His choice.
Why accept His choice? Matthew 24:30-31 tells us that there will come a day when God will gather together all of His elect and take them home, to be with Him, forever. This is heaven, that is the home of the elect forever! Don’t you want to go there? Don’t you want to be with God forever? The alternative does not bear thinking about …
So, come to Him, accept your place as the elect of God; accept His choosing of you and take your place with Him for eternity.
